But it’s true. He waits for Vader to come to him. He deliberately gives ground. He meets Vader’s attacks, parries them expertly, but does not move towards the offensive. He lets Vader expend all that energy to attack and attack and attack.
I love the idea that Obi-Wan developed this style after TPM because he never really needed to be on the defensive before, his fighting partner was a very skilled Jedi Master who obviously could do well for himself. So why the change? Ataru clearly wasn’t a problem, given that it defeated Maul and cut him in half.
But you know what does change? Anakin is there. Anakin who doesn’t have the training another Jedi would have. Anakin who is going to need so much protection. Anakin who is so aggressive that he needs someone to complement him–and that’s what Obi-Wan became. The counterbalance to Anakin’s fighting style, that they worked so well as a team because Obi-Wan was always there to protect Anakin with a more defensive style, to fit their styles together in a way that benefited this person he loved so much.
It’s not that Obi-Wan’s not good at other styles (we see him be aggressive when he needs to be, we see him dual wielding, and he’s pretty damn incredible at them), but that it was a good counter to Anakin’s style, to be the more patient style, to be the defense that Anakin wouldn’t have wanted to develop as much as his offense, to outlast even Anakin’s tremendous skill and power with the Force.
And he’s still doing it here. Defensive fighting against Anakin and even when he’s old and tired and sad, Obi-Wan can still stand up against a monster like Vader. And he still doesn’t want to attack–Vader may not be the person he loved, but he cannot think of anything but Anakin when he looks at him. He tried to strike Anakin down once and couldn’t bear to do it, not even to be merciful, not even when it was deserved after all Anakin had done. God knows Obi-Wan can’t do it now, either.
