THANK YOU

THIS. I ALWAYS WONDERED.

FINALLY!

Mythology: the received wisdom concerning a particular subject; the collective or personal ideology or set of beliefs which underpins or informs a particular point of view.

A body or collection of myths, esp. those relating to a particular person or thing, or belonging to a particular religious or cultural tradition.

(I though these were the most relevant from the OED)

In actual academic and religious dialogue, religions are labeled depending on the context of the discussion.

So when you are studying or discussing religions, Hinduism is considered a religion in that context.

Conversely, it’s seen as a mythology in a mythological context, just like Christianity is also viewed as mythology within a mythology class or the like (if you’re in a class or situation where Christianity isn’t defined as a mythology as well as a religion, run. this person doesn’t know what they are talking about)

From a scholarly perspective, the stories that make up any religion are also the mythology of the religion.

If some bigot tries to say that only Christianity is a religion or whatever just point out that in actual, educated circles, Hinduism is an actual religion and Christianity is as much as a mythology as they claim your religion is.
